Welcome to my advocacy blog where I rant and rave about all the things I do to fill up my free time - from drowning myself in UN-ECOSOC documents with the World Youth Alliance, to building houses in GK and eating my way around the Southern Tagalog region with Youth Trip.

If you have any upcoming advocacy projects or conferences, feel free to send me a message and I'd be happy to re-post (or even attend!).

Hope you keep checking back as I update my calendar with more events from the all the cool people i know who are trying to make a difference in the Philippines, and eventually, the world.

As Lee would say, "Defenders of Human Dignity, Unite!!!"

My daughter Anna’s idea to build prosperity for our people and heal the land by creating world-class organic products which are affordable to everyone makes me proud as a father and as a Filipino. Soon the world will see the beauty of our country and our people as her example inspires many more Filipinos to invest the best of themselves in bringing out the best in our people and our land.

The Philippines' first ever Fair Trade Fair - '4 Inspirations'! A 3 day fair that pays tribute to the to the ingenuity of Filipino artisans. The Fair will showcase not only the exquisite products of these enterprises but also illustrate their ethical and socially responsible practices

The celebration will integrate a series of events that will be carried out across the Philippines in May 2009. APFTI, along with the Philippine Fair Trade Forum (PFTF) and other fair trade actors will organise activities aimed at raising the level of fair trade awareness in the country. The main activity will be a five-day Fairtrade Fair in Metro Manila that will showcase exquisitely designed crafts and delectable food products made by Philippine small producers. During the fair various sub-activities will be conducted. First, would be the Opening Programme in which dignitaries will be invited to share their thoughts on the theme of the celebration or provide statements of support for fair trade. These special guests, along with an identified celebrity endorser will formally open the fair. A media briefing will follow the opening ceremonies. In the middle of the week, a symposium on the theme of the celebration or a current issue related to fair trade will be held within the trade fair venue. APFTI’s Annual Fair Trade Partners’ Conference will also be held within this period to discuss partnerships and other issues that impact on small producers. The culminating activity will be a mini concert to feature local bands and performers. A similar version of this activity (although on a much smaller scale) will be held in select regions of the country within the whole month of May.

This official opening program will double as a Fair Trade Forum, with invited speakers, producer testimonials, performance by local ethnic band Makiling, Tour of Buyers and Guests and Media Interviews.

In the Philippines, the WFTO-Asia Regional Office will join APFTI and PFTF in celebrating the World Fair Trade Day in May 9. The specific activities where the WFTO-Asia will join will be announced soon.

Pinoys, make a big bang for Fair Trade at our FREE concert! Featuring leading Pinoy world music acts such as Sylam, Kadangyan, Talahib, Lakbaylahi. Come along, beat a drum, stamp your feet, make a noise - let's Beat Climate Change. Beat Economic Crisis. Beat Poverty!

Radioactive Sago Project at Youth Vote Philippines Launch
with an introduction by Gang Badoy of Rock Ed.
September 20, 2008
Street Party at Cubao X

It was a great night. Nahiya naman ako. I'm 24 and I have never registered to vote in my life. (And I know a lot of my friends are like me too.)

One of the people speaking at the launch said that 62% of the Philippine voting population is actually composed of the youth. And I remember thinking, "Talaga? So altogether, we would have made a real difference pala?"

So this year, I'm making a promise to register for the upcoming elections and become more involved in the whole process. My Philippines. My future. Thanks to Youth Vote Philippines for making an effort to make more young people aware of this.

And to all my friends... Tara! Register na tayo! Ü

for everyone

We had our sherpa orientation last September 16, 2008 at the PDI office to prepare all the volunteers who will be helping at the service project sites on the day of Servathon itself. I've been assigned to help the Chevron team doing rehabilitation work at the Don Bosco Center in Makati. This should be fun. Looking forward to October 11! :-)

I initially intended to write a separate blog entry about the Kulinarya Tagala Tour especially for this advocacy blog. But work suddenly caught up with me and I never found the time to. So pardon me, I will just have to re-post the one I wrote for my personal blog.

I've always been a fan of YTRiP, so on their special Kulinarya Tagala Tour, I decided to drag along a couple of officemates who didn't really care all that much about my "NGO things". So I wanted to bring them over and show them that well.. the whole "NGO thing"... it's funner than they imagine it to be!

- - - -

When I first got invited to the Kulinarya Tagala Tour, I figured this was one of the NGO stuff I do that my EON friends can enjoy. So thinking it would be a refreshing change from all the drinking, and drinking, and drinking... I sent over an email to everyone back at The Firm. And as luck would have it (plus a little bit of hard work, coz to a certain extent I did have to force/convince them to go!) Pao and Migs finally decided to go.

And off we went to the Southern Tagalog Region for a full day of...

FOOD

CULTURE & ARTS

PHILIPPINE HISTORY

GOOFING AROUND

AND...

well, well, well... we ended up closing our day with a little bit of drinking, after all!
Cheers to Quezon Province, for their lambanog and their stylized Tagayan Ritual!

Remember Pao, I say "titimtiman ko lang",
you say "Sasaluin kita... ang tamis ng alak mo!"
Nyahahahha!

Once again, thank you to Albert Bainto for the amazing photography.
And a big big hug to YTRiP and Tita Tina for orchestrating this amazing day of overloading our senses - from the physical to the spiritual!

Check out the album from that day - click here.

I haven't even blogged about last Saturday's Backpacking 101 session, and this Saturday's Tour of Sacred Spaces is already coming up! September is such a busy busy month for Youth Trip!

I hope you guys can join us for this tour, it's quite unique as we will be visiting places of worship of three different religions - and try to understand & appreciate their differences and similarities. It's schedules for September 13, at 1:00pm for a small fee of P300.

Meeting will be at McDonald's Katipunan at 12:30 in the afternoon. If you're interested in joining, please confirm with the World Youth Alliance through Frank (wyaap.frankchiu@gmail.com) or Youth Trip (clareamador@gmail.com).

This tour is brought to you by Youth Trip and World Youth Alliance.

A repost from YTRiP.
I'm going to this event so leave a message and let me know if you're going too! I'll look forward to seeing you guys there :-)

Youth Venture enables young people to learn early on in life that they can lead social change. Ashoka developed the concept of Youth Venture from understanding a key insight of Ashoka Fellows in the field of youth development: one of the most effective ways to improve the lives of youth is to empower them to realize their own ability to make positive social change.

Youth Venture thus inspires and invests in teams of young people to start and lead their own social ventures, and is building a powerful network of young changemakers across the world. It is currently operating in the US, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, India, South Africa, Thailand, France, Germany, and Spain.

Ashoka is launching Youth Venture in the Philippines this August spearheaded by Harvey Keh, Program Director and Katrina Wy, Program Officer. They are currently in the process of finding partner companies, foundations, schools, community-based organizations, media and government offices to cooperate and work with us to help us realize our mission of honing the leadership and entrepreneurial skills of young Filipinos.

YV Philippines plans to run Dream It, Do It Workshops in schools and communities around Metro Manila first and eventually expand operations beyond the Metro within the succeeding years.

Start:     Sep 1, '08 1:30p
End:     Sep 1, '08 4:30p
Location:     Ampitheatre, Ateneo Professional Schools, Rockwell Center, Makati
Ashoka's Youth Venture and the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation invites you
to an afternoon of listening to aspiring young social entrepreneurs speak about their plans of helping their own communities.

The event is open to everyone.

Last year I was part of the Hands On Servathon team and I have to say it was one of the most fulfilling projects ever. It was so overwhelming to see all the people come together in the spirit of volunteerism and nation building. Originally conceived as a corporate volunteerism project which asked companies to encourage their employees to volunteer, at Servathon 2007, we had a happy surprise - one group from Ateneo decided to do it as a batch reunion activity. Such a refreshing way to celebrate a batch anniversary, dontcha think?

Saw this post on Claire's blog, Servathon is getting bigger and better each year! Last year we had 20 corporations join in on the fun. This year, they've pledged to bring it up to 30. Go team! Heheh, good luck guys!

Here's an article on it from ABS-CBN Global:
